BEL Basic Expedition Leader

  • The BEL is a nationally recognised award that allows people to
  • Lead groups in lowland areas - below 600m
  • Be responsible for the care of others in the outdoors including day journeys
  • Organise base and mobile camps

The BEL award is now the minimum qualification required by many Operating Authorities offering the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme - it is required to train and lead groups for the expedition section of the Bronze and Silver Awards. The award does not qualify people to lead groups in remote or mountainous areas. Mountain Leader (Summer) is required for Gold Award. The course is 90 hours (normally 4 week ends) of instruction and practical work. Post course requirements are that candidates log 30 hours of leadership experience.
